Industry in Lithuania

Lithuanian industry, along with the entire economy, had been integrated to meet the needs of the Soviet Union. Most of the largest industrial enterprises were an integral part of the military industrial complex. Such enterprises faced complex problems as Lithuania began to break the ties of political and economic dependence in 1991.
The problems included the loss of major Estern markets, low levels of technology in comparison with europe. Competitive battles for winning new customers, and alignment of high quality standards to expectations.
The economic decline that followes independence and the subsequent breakdown of economic arrangements with the former Soviet Union was arrested by 1995, when a 3 per cent real GDP growth was recorded.
Lithuania boasts the largest Baltic economy and a diversified industrial base. The industrial sector includes electronics, chemicals, machine tooling, metal procesing, wood products, constuction materials, food procesing and light industry, the latter including the manufacturing of textiles, clothing, furniture and household appliances.

TEXTILES
The textile sector, with traditions than originated many centuries ago, has realatively modern produktion facilities.The first linen and wool mills, leather taneneries and footwear factories were established in the 18th century.
In 1998, textiles accounted for 3.3 per cent of GDP. The sector is rather large and includes about 10 very large factories with more than 500 employees and more than 300 smaller enterprises, with together employ more than 30,000 people.
In 1992, the eastern European countries were still the main markets for lithuania textiles, 60 per cent of total exports being destined to the former USSR and only 5 per cent being exported to the West.
