Formal vs Informal Language

More casual and spontaneous. It is used when communicating with friends or family either in writing or in conversation.
It is used when writing personal emails, text messages and in some business correspondence.
The tone of informal language is more personal than formal language.
Less personal than informal language. It is used when writing for professional or academic purposes like university assignments.
• Informal: He shouldn’t have covered his mouth or folded his arms.
• Formal: He should not have covered his mouth or folded his arms.
First person pronouns
• Informal: I should have considered various research methods for the study.
• Formal: Various research methods should have been considered for the study.
1. Place and time
We use formal language in situations that are serious or that involve people we don’t know well.
Informal language is more commonly used in situations that are more relaxed and involve people we know well.
2. Informal English Uses More Contractions
A contraction is a shortening of two words that combines them into one.
Example Sentence:
• "I can’t go to the event today because I have a family gathering this evening."
New Sentence:
• "I cannot go to event today because I have a family gathering this evening."
Examples :
• He might be ill because he’s sneezing and coughing every second.
• We should’ve walked on the pavement and not the motorway.
• He might be bored or annoyed. Look! He’s yawning and scowling.
• You don’t need to wait for me. I’ll buy the souvenirs and take a lift.
