Explain one study of the potential role of pheromones in human behaviour.
Pheromones are chemical messengers that transmit information from one species to another. In animals, they are processed in the accessory olfactory bulb, but whether or not there is a biological mechanism in humans to process pheromones is unknown. Pheromones are ectohormones meaning they act outside the body of the individual that is secreting them. Also pheromones are usually produced by glands located on the skin. This SAQ will be focused on example of how putative human pheromone - androstadienone affects mood of women in the presence of man.
One study of pheromones was done in 2005 by researchers Lundstrom and Olsson. This study aim was to investigate the effect of androstadienone on the mood of women in the presence of men. There were 37 heterosexual women participants, mean age 25 years and with normal menstrual cycle. In the study there was used experiment method: two independent variables with two levels each. Procedure was that a 2x2 experimental design was used to study the female participants.
