E.M. Forster "A Passage to India"

The novel “A Passage to India” revolves mainly around the relationships between different characters within their environment, with themselves as well as with nature. The story line roughly divides the characters into two groups: the colonials, in other words the ruling race and the Indians. Forster covertly, through characters’ dialogues and thoughts, suggests which group or characters he sympathizes with more than the other in different circumstances. The yet absent unity of India is also present among the symbolism of characters and their actions as well author’s perception of them.
One of the groups in Chandrapore, the stereotypical colonials, consists of the Anglo- Indians that have spent a reasonably long period of time in India, such as the Turtons. The standard Anglo- Indian has no respect for any Indians except for the rajahs and even those are at an equal level. They consider the natives to be the inferior wicked and immoral race, always ready to involve themselves into something against the law, which results in constant suspicion. Forster’s depiction of this is clearly unsympathetic showing the English, especially the ladies, blinded by the prejudice against Indians, closed minded and allowing no alternative to what they already believe. This leads the English, with a few exceptions of Fielding and Mrs. Moore, to think that Aziz was guilty of rape only because he was an Indian. Ronny Heaslop has already become one of them, though there is heavy importance on the fact that he had not been so impassive towards humans before the events in the novel occurred. This shows how colonial India can transform people, which is Ronny’s purpose in the novel, especially if their character is weak and to survive they must fit in.
