Introduction
Disability – to be less able, to be at a disadvantage in earning one’s living or in the ordinary activities of daily life (Blaxter 1976, introduction). According internet source (wikipedia, disability 2008) disability is: “[…] wheelchair or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group. The term is often used to refer to individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic disease”.
I had an opportunity to write one of the three themes connected with disability: “Disability Politics”, “Disability Studies” and “Disability and Society”. The last one looked most interesting for me. I have my own friends with physical, mental or complex disabilities. Being with them on their daily life in public places, I face with non-disabled people reaction to them, its variable from negative to positive attitudes. Mostly, environment is not accessible for them, and it is one of the main problems why people with disabilities, especially with physical impairments, cannot participate in society life like their peers.
This theme title – “Disability and Society” reflect the attitude that disability and society are two separated things. I want to say that disability is still problem of the disabled people, but not society’s; disability is not natural thing in society’s life yet. So, in this essay my goals are:
1) to look what was the attitude of society to disabled people in historical context;
2) to show the main ideas of medical and sociological model of disability;
