Are there group agents? Examine the arguments for and against.
In this essay I will be discussing whether group agents exist or not. I will be examining various arguments for and against it. Firstly, I will stablish what a term ’agency’ means, and what is the distinction between group and individual agency, also the difference between ‘agent’ and ‘agency’ itself. I will establish what conditions needed to be fulfilled for a group agent to exist. I will be discussing these conditions in more depth and give examples and test various premises. I will take a deeper dive into discussion if a group can make rational decisions, which will bring me to a topic of mental states and if a group can have one. To counterargue these statements I talk about The Borg objection, The language objection and the objection of ‘Just individual’. To finish off, I will discuss the statement by the philosopher Philip Pettit, who argues for group agency. After this I will conclude that group agency and agent exist and that it does not necessarily have to be the exact same as the individual agent.
To put it simply, ‘an agent is a being that with a capacity to act, and ‘agency’ denotes the exercise or manifestation of this capacity.’ (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2019) One who acts on the orders of others or is powerless to make decisions on their own is said to have no or low agency.
A table exists over and above its component parts which is why we can replace the parts without replacing the table. Let’s say if we replaced one leg of the table with a leg from a different table, it would still exist. The purpose and function of the table remains the same.
