An introduction to tourism

Tourism is one form of recreation, along with sports activities, hobbies and pastimes and all of these activities are uses of our leisure time. Also it is movement of people away from their normal place of residence. There are two classes of visitor: a) Tourists - temporary visitors staying at least 24 hours, whose purpose could be leisure, business, family, mission or meeting; b) Excursionists - temporary visitors staying less than 24 hours, including cruise travelers but excluding travelers in transit.
Finally, definition invented by the World Tourism Organisation was confirmed in 1993: Tourism includes the activities of persons travelling to and staying in place outside their normal place of residence for not more than one year for leisure, business or other purposes.
Selling holidays is like selling dreams. When tourists buy a package tour abroad, they are buying more than a simple collection of services, they are also buying the temporary use of a strange environment and novel geographical features – old-world towns, tropical landscapes – plus the culture and heritage of the region and other benefits such as service, atmosphere, hospitality. Tourism is not a homogeneous product; it tends to vary in standard and quality over time. Another characteristic of tourism is that it cannot be brought to the consumer; rather, the consumer must be brought to the product.
Motivation establishes firstly the purpose of a visit. There are 3 general categories of purpose: 1) holidays (including visits to friends and relatives); 2) business (including meetings, conferences); 3) other (study, religious pilgrimages, health). The reason why a specific type of holiday or resort is chosen is that different people will look for different qualities in the same destination.
