Cell division, or mitosis, is a fundamental process that is essential for the proper growth and development of multicellular organisms. During this process, the genetic material of each cell must be accurately segregated into two daughter cells. Any errors in chromosome segregation, such as the loss or gain of even a single chromosome, can have catastrophic consequences for the organism. The centromere, a complex protein structure located at the center of each chromosome, plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate segregation of chromosomes during mitosis. In this essay, I will review and compare two articles that provide detailed insights into the structure and function of the centromere and its crucial role in cellular division.
In Thomas Schalch and Florian A. Stainer’s review of the “Structure of centromere chromatin: from nucleosome to chromosomal architecture”, which was originally published online on November 17, 2016, authors attempt to explicate the obscure process of how the centromere core and the pericentric region work together in establishing a three-dimensional structure that enables attachment to microtubules via kinetochore complex and that supports the tension generated during the segregation of chromosomes. The creators of this previously mentioned review article describe in detail the functions and characteristics of Centromere protein A, also known as CENPA, that are essential for centromere function and vitality. Furthermore, these studies thus uncovered that Centromeres can be divided into centromere core and pericentromeric regions, where the core regions provide the attachment site for the kinetochore and the pericentromere is responsible for sister chromatid cohesion. Stated analyses were done by use of electron microscopy and experiments on living creatures such as mice or yeast. Thomas Schalch and Florian A. Stainer conclude by revealing a balanced system of transcription and modifications that tightly cooperates with...
