Women Expatriates

Introduction
Every organization seeks to have the most effective human resources system and as the world
becomes more and more globalized, businesses are increasingly seeking to staff overseas
positions by employing more expatriates. Expatriate is relating to a person living outside their
native country: as in our case, expatriate workers. The big question for employers is whether to
choose women or men multinationals? However, companies do choose men more frequently
than women because of various beliefs such as that woman have barriers in international
management. As a result, just 23 per cent of all expatriates are women. But do these beliefs
denote reality, or are they just silly myths?
Women do not want to be international managers
This belief is not true and it is only diminishing women chances to become leaders in
international corporations. According to a research done by Alder, although this may have been
different in the past, today there is no sex-related difference with regard to wanting an
international career. Furthermore, in recent years the number of woman, who has successfully
taken on foreign assignments, even to countries such as Japan, Brazil, and China, has risen
considerably. Woman are not only as likely to welcome such opportunities as are their male
colleagues, but they often perform better than their male colleagues, even in traditionally male-
dominated cultures, such as Asia and the Middle East.
Companies refuse to send women abroad
Is it true that companies are refusing to select women for international assignments?
Organizations hesitate and do not want to select and send females to foreign countries especially
for management positions. In their opinion, foreigners are prejudiced against women. Moreover,
companies concern about physical safety when women are travelling to work for underdeveloped
countries.
According to Napier and Taylor survey, US firms infrequently send women abroad because they
believe most foreign countries are unfriendly to females in the workplace. For that reason
companies think that a negative business climate will simply interfere...
