Why are we sometimes justified in believing what other people tell us?

In this essay I will be talking about thesis of testimony and why are people sometimes justified in believing what other people tell us. I will start by explaining what testimony means and what are the problems with testimonial justification. To discuss further I will introduce Scottish Enlightenment philosopher David Hume and a religiously trained philosopher Thomas Reid. I will go into detail to explain their stances on when are justified to rely on each other. David Hume is a reductionist who thinks that testimony can’t always be reliable and that one needs evidence to justify believe others. As for Reid, there's this innate, hard-wired principle of credulity and this innate hard-wired principle of veracity. I will go into more detail how Reid and Hume counterargued each other. To conclude support my statement that it should be up to a personal evaluation when to believe others, I’ll set a couple of examples from real life situations. I will also talk on current affairs in Russia and the spread of propaganda. How we should be vigilant and hard on ourselves when trusting the external sources of information on the news.
When a person tells you something, that can sometimes be a good reason enough for believing what they say. Even though testimony thesis states that someone’s testimony can constitute a reason to believe what’s being said, it does not imply that it always does. Whilst the testimony thesis argues that one’s testimony can constitute a reason to believe something, the reason itself might well be overridden by other considerations. There are multiple problems for believing in testimony. A person must rely on what the other person says.
