Traditions, festivals and customs in Great Britain

Christmas is observed on the 25th of December. It is the most celebrated and colorful festival during the whole year. People give each other presents and send Christmas cards. Children look for presents in their stockings. On Christmas the traditional English dinner is turkey and pudding.
Not all English people celebrate the New Year. Some have a New Year party at home. It usually begins at 8 o’clock in the evening. A twelve people have a toast to the New Year. Many people go to Trafalgar Square in London. They sing songs and dance round the Christmas Tree.
There is very interesting tradition in the north of England and Scotland. It’s an old custom of the First Footing. The first visitor, who comes into a house on New Year’s morning, is called the First Foot. He brings some bread, a piece of coal, and a coin. That means that the family will have good luck, be happy, and in the coming year. He also brings an evergreen branch as a promise of the continuing life.
