Tips for describing pictures

• If you are asked to describe a photo or a picture, look at it carefully and think before you start talking.

• Talk for all the time you are given (3-4 min), use every second.

• If you are given two or more pictures, you shouldn’t describe each photo in great details. The important thing is to compare and contrast the two pictures.

• Don‘t panic if you don‘t know the words for all the things in the picture.

• Don‘t talk about anything else that the task doesn‘t ask, focus on the picture and the questions you are given.

• Try to use a wide range of grammar and vocabulary to show what you know.

• Write down the key words/ phrases.

• Don’t let mistakes stop you from speaking. Correct your own mistakes if possible, or start the sentence again, but don’t stop completely.

• Don‘t panic if the examiner gives you follow-up questions. Try to answer them as better as possible.

• If you get stressed or your mind goes blank, don‘t panic. Take a deep breath, look at the task and start again.
