The 1960 Valdivia earthquake

The Valdivia earthquake or the Great Chilean earthquake on 22 May 1960 was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. It is placed at 9.4–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale. It occurred in the afternoon (15:11 local time), and lasted for approximately 10 minutes.
This earthquake was felt in Valdivia, Hawaii, Lumaco, Alaska, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Russia, the west of North and South America. The most damaged town would be Valdivia. It was terrible, floods came crashing in the buildings. Warehouses and houses were demolished and oil spills occurred in the event. Cracks in the earth were formed in the highway, which lead to tons of cars going down into deep holes.
