The Hill of Crosses

The hill of Crosses is located in Meškuičiai village in Šiauliai district, very near to railway of Šiauliai-Riga . It is a very famous hill bearing witness to the reverence and allegiance to the sacrifice of the cross, through which Christ saved people of all ages and generations. This place attracts many tourists from all over the world.
Chronicals mention that in the Middle Ages there was a wooden castle on this hill, named "Kula". It was destroyed by the Livonian army in 1348. For many years the mountain stood bare. 19th century in the middle of the 19th century, on the mound, popularly called Castle Hill, Jurgaičiai, Domantai mound, Prayer Hill, the construction of crosses began. First crosses were built in prayer to God for health. According to other stories, the construction of the cross on the mountain began in 1863. in memory of those who died in the uprising. After suppressing the uprising, the tsarist government forbade the construction of crosses - people whose homesteads had crosses were punished and the cross was demolished. The pious people did not intend to refuse to build crosses, but they chose a more remote place, such was the Hill of Crosses. So the Hill of Crosses is also a sign of the strength of faith that overcomes all obstacles.
Despite the bans of the tsarist government, during the First World War, the Hill of Crosses gradually grew. The mountain flourished in the interwar period. People used to pray to him, sacrifices to St. Mass. Especially a lot of people gathered in the mountains on summer holidays. In mid-July, indulgences were celebrated on the Hill of Crosses.
