The lymphatic system is a complex network of lymphoid organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts, lymph tissues, lymph capillaries and lymph vessels that produce and transport lymph fluid from tissues to the circulatory system. The lymphatic system is a major component of the immune system.
The lymphatic system. As blood flows along the capillaries, a certain amount of fluid leaks out of the capillaries into the surrounding tissues. This is called tissue fluid. It is formed by a kind of filtration: the blood cells and proteins stay behind in the capillaries, but the other components of the blood can pass through the capillary walls. Not all the tissue fluid returns to the capillaries. Some of it enters blind-ended, thin-walled vessels called lymphatics. The lymphatics from all parts of the body join up to make two large vessels which empty their contents in the blood system.
Capillaries. The tissue fluid seeps round amongst the cells. As more is formed, the surplus is drained into narrow channels called lymph capillaries. Once inside these capillaries, the fluid is known as lymph. It is a colorless liquid. There are lymph capillaries all over the body. Together they make up the lymphatic system. The lymph capillaries eventually lead to the veins, so lymph gets back into the bloodstream.
Some of the larger lymphatics can contract, but most of the lymph flow results from the vessels being compressed from time to time when the body muscles contract in the movements such as walking or breathing. There are valves in the lymphatics like those in the veins. So that when the lymphatics are squashed, the fluid in them is forced to go in one direction only: towards the heart.
Lymphoid organs and tissues. The defense portion of the lymphatic system includes the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus. It also includes the tonsils, adenoids,...
