Summary of the article „Compulsive overeating as an addiction disorder. A review of theory and evidence“ by Davis Caroline and Carter C. Jacqueline.
The article „Compulsive overeating as an addiction disorder. A review of theory and evidence“ is a cluster of arguments based on scientific evidence. These arguments propose the idea that compulsive overeating should be classified as an addiction. The article goes through supporting theoretical and empirical evidence such as history of the term “addiction”, what makes a substance addicting, how addiction affects person’s quality of life, social life, ability to control one’s actions and neurobiological patterns of addiction.
Firstly, it is made clear that for a very long time addiction was not seen as a disease, rather an immoral action. Only in the 20th century addiction was classified as a psychological disease, that involved abuse of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, opioids, amphetamines and etc. Furthermore, only in recent years the idea that compulsive actions for instance: gaming, internet shopping, social media use and overeating, should be considered a new type of addiction. In conclusion, the medical term “addiction” is still in the process of being formed, thus it is quite a challenge to classify certain behaviors as an addiction.
Secondly, it is important to acknowledge that all addictive substances that are being used today, came from nature. All plants that early hominids used for enhanced energy, suppressed appetite, prevention of fatigue, were the earliest forms of drug substances. These substances were not misused and were ingested in small doses, they were more like supplements to early humans. But as human intelligence evolved, human beings developed the ability to purify psychoactive plant substances and found uses that were more direct than ingestion.
