 “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Saenz is the first book in the Aristotle and Dante book series. It’s a young adult novel that tells the story of two Mexican-American teenagers Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Dante Quintana, their friendship, and their struggles with racial and ethnic identity, sexuality, and family relationships. The story is set in El Paso, Texas in 1987.
The story begins with the introduction of the main character Aristotle Mendoza, from whose perspective the story is told. Everything seems ordinary and uninteresting but soon everything changes when Ari meets Dante - a boy who is a polar opposite of him. Perhaps the differences influenced their great bond: the two boys became friends instantly after meeting. Unfortunately, not long after their friendship is tested. After a sudden accident involving the boys takes place, the two teenagers become emotionally estranged from one another. The gap in their emotional bond deepens when Dante...
