Smiling can be described as a facial expression in which the eyes brighten and the corners of the mouth curve slightly upward, which typically expresses some sort of amusement, pleasure or sometimes even scorn. Though a smile is much more than just a mere facial expression, many different surveys and studies have found that smiling can be highly beneficial to a person due to a number of different reasons.
Firstly, smiling has been proven to be greatly beneficial to a person’s mental health. As stated in a study by Walden University, a beaming smile increases mood-enhancing hormones while simultaneously decreasing stress-enhancing hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline. When we smile, we trigger our brains to start producing and releasing more pain and stress relieving chemicals called endorphins, which act as antidepressants. Even fake smiling can improve someone’s mood. According to recent studies, fake smiles can have a positive impact on mood. This works by “tricking” certain facial muscles into triggering, in turn making your brain think you’re happy.
