Small States – Eurosceptic or Europhile?

There are at least two different approaches to this question. First one would be a general discussion on whether the EU membership is beneficial for the small states; and the second one would be the analysis of a few small EU countries, as specific examples in order to see whether these countries have benefited from their membership in the EU and whether the public opinion in those particular countries is in favour of the EU related issues. Because of the limmited size of this study, I feel that only one of the approaches will fit in, and I have chosen the second one for the possibility of deeper analysis.
From the material I have gone over, consisting of the course literature, additional readings and the internet sources, such as the Eurobarometer, I have got a strong impression that the European Union is considered as a major source for the providing of economical and political stability, necessary for any country’s development; even more so when it comes to the small states in particular. I would therefore argue that the small states are, in fact, benefiting from their EU membership and that they therefore are Europhile.
My analysis is based on a short case study of two relatively small EU states: the Republic of Ireland and the Republic of Lithuania. Comparing Ireland, with a relatively long-time membership (since 1973), and Lithuania that has recently joined the EU (in 2004), it is possible to draw some general conclusions and to check whether the public opinion on EU integration is apt to change, once the country has established it self within the EU.
Apart from the duration of their EU membership, Ireland and Lithuania have a lot of similarities. Their population figures are quite small in relation to other major EU countries (Ireland – 4.1mil1 and Lithuania...
