Is interest group politics in the UK similar or different from interest group politics in the US? Defend your answer.
People, who are far away from its country’s political life, might think about pressure groups only as movements against racism, air pollution, women rights, but in fact nowadays it is more focused on influencing the government, representing workers and business interests. More and more people want to fight for their own and others rights, represent their ideas and introduce them to society, and not necessarily being a member of parliament or other government institutions. This is how A. R. Ball interprets the concept of pressure group. The interaction of competing groups determines the action of much political conflict provides wider avenues of political participation and ensures a wider distribution of power1. What are the politics of pressure groups? Is it similar or different in various countries? How can interest groups affect government and public? I will analyse interest groups of two most developed countries in the world, the United States of America and United Kingdom, by describing and comparing key elements of both countries interest groups politics. Although the political interest groups in the UK might appear to be similar to the US, evidence suggests that there are also a lot of differences.
UK and US pressure group politics are not similar. In many cases their aims substantially are the same, but different systems of government changes their aims to achieve them. Britain’s structure concentrates their political power at the centre and in hands of relatively strong executive figures, and therefore pressure groups regard their efforts as more successful if they gain access to ministers and their civil servants than if they are only able to influence Members of parliament in the House of Commons2.
