Hello, I would like to present in my opinion one of the most critical problems in Lithuania - poverty. Poverty affects millions of people worldwide, including right here in Lithuania. This presentation will explore the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to alleviate poverty in Lithuania.

1. Skaidrė - What is poverty?

The term poverty refers to the state or condition in which people or communities lack the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. As such, their basic human needs cannot be met. Because of poverty people and families may go without proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention.

1. Skaidrė - Absolute poverty rate

Here you can see an absolute poverty rate in 2021,2022 and 2023.

• In 2021, the rate was 3,6% then In 2022 it was 4% or around 110,000 and in 2023 it rose to 4,2% of Lithuania’s people who lived below the absolute poverty line. This rise could be influenced by inflation, which resulted in a living cost increase.

• In 2021, the absolute poverty threshold was less than 260 euros a month or 546 euros for a household of two adults and two children.

• And the at-risk-of-poverty threshold stood at 483 euros per capita and 1,015 euros per household.

• Lithuania ranks 17th among the poorest countries in Europe (2021 m.)

1. Skaidrė -

Here is poverty risk levels in Lithuania’s municipalities. High-risk of poverty territories are colored in dark and light brown, low risk of poverty is in white and medium is in blue. The highest risks are in rural areas of Lithuania, for example, Biržai, Pasvalys, Pakruojis, Kelmė, and Molėtai. And low risk levels are in Vilnius, Šiauliai. 28% of all municipalities are at high risk of poverty and if we count lighter shades of brown it makes up to 63%, while low-risk regions account for 15%. That could be because rural areas in Lithuania often don't have many job opportunities and quality education and that can lead to people who can't work and make money for living expenses.
