Our environment faces several problems, and many of these seem to be worsening with time. Overpopulation is one of the biggest threats to our environment.
What specific problems can overpopulation cause? What solutions are there to the problems?
In your essay, give at least two problems and at least two solutions.
Overpopulation is the state whereby the human population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying capacity of the ecological setting. People do not realize that this phenomenon is one of the biggest issue in our society. Therefore, overpopulation leads to two significant issues and offers two straightforward solutions.
There are two factors that causes overpopulation. The main problem of overpopulation is poverty. Poverty and lack of economic opportunities can lead to higher birth rates as families may have more children to support their household income. According to a study published by Einar H. Dyvik on March 31st, 2023, Niger had the highest birth rate in the world, followed by Angola and Benin. As a consequence of Niger’s low economic status and families’ low income, they are forced to have more children to make ends meet. Furthermore, another predicament of overpopulation is religious beliefs. Some religious morals can influence towards creating an enormous family size, potentially resulting in higher birth rates in certain communities. For example, “Quiverfull” is a Christian religious movement, where people believe that God knows how many children are right for them, and that creating large families will help spread the word of the Bible. Consequently, poverty, lack of economic opportunities and religious morals cause overpopulation.
There are also two simple solutions to the overpopulation crisis. The primary solution to overpopulation is poverty decrease. Poverty can be drastically decreased by supporting low-income families with social welfare programs, that are offered by the country’s government. When families receive these kinds of pays, they do not need more children to maintain household income. Countries like South Korea, Italy and Spain, have these programs well managed and as of today, they are one of the lowest fertility rate countries. Another effective solution is to invest in education. By providing a higher education to citizens, people would find easily better-paying jobs, which would instantly solve families struggling to make ends meet. Investing in education also enhances critical thinking skills, innovation, and country’s economic growth. Additionally, educated individuals are more likely to delay marriage and having a child, leading to smaller family sizes. Thus, poverty decrease and investment in education can drastically decrease birth rate in countries, leading to solving overpopulation.
