Mutual relations between the Czech and Lithuanian Republics

Lithuania has with the Czech Republic greatly intensive political, economical, military and cultural relations and expresses a keen interest in the their omnifarious development. Centre of gravity of the cooperation lies permanently in the sphere of policy and economy. Adown the last two years the bilateral cooperation uncoiled especially in the security sector - integration into NATO - and in the proportion relevant to the preparedness of each country also in the preparation of the integration into the European Union. NATO member states decided in August 2002 that the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lithuania will act, in the period of two years (9/2000-8/2002), as the NATO Contact Point Embassy.
The Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the former Czechoslovak Federative Republic were struck up on 9 September 1991 after the restoration of the Lithuanian independence. Lithuania recognized the state of the Czech Republic on 5 January 1993. In both countries the diplomatic representations were established at the level of the Embassies.
For Czech-Lithuanian relations a big intensity is characteristic both at the governmental and parliamentarian levels. In the year of 1999 contacts in the security sector started to deepen. The Czech Prime-Minister Zeman’s visit brought a new dynamic to the mutual relations. Members of the delegation were among others Minister of Agriculture Fencl, Minister of Industry and Trade Gregr and Minister of Education Zeman. Security and military consultations occur regularly at various level, among which “Round table” at the level of foreign and defence vice-ministers is having a great importance. At the beginning of the year of 2001 a “Parliamentarian group for the relations with the Czech Republic”, consisted of 54 MPs, was formed. Delegations of parliamentarian committees pay the mutual visits regularly.
