Mergers and acquisitions

In the past few years many companies have combined or splitted to form new companies. And all this is happening very fast. On a closer look, however, you could find that deals are very different in their size), form and effect. Most deals are done to combine resources for economies of scale. That is, to be able to buy or produce large quantities of an item. However, large companies are also trying to be more efficient and competitive by paring away their weaker parts.
Mergers. Two companies combine to create a new company. The old companies cease to exist, and a new enterprise is formed.
Acquisitions. One company buys another or parts of another company and emerges as the controlling corporation.
Divestitures. The flip side of an acquisition is a divestiture. One company sells a portion of its business to another company.
Hostile takeovers. One company buys enough stock of another company to take control of the board of directors, then throws out the existing management.
Leveraged buyouts. One or more individuals purchase the company with borrowed funds, using the assets of a company they‘re buying to secure the loan. The loans are then repaid out of the company‘s revenue or with stock.
Joint ventures. Two companies combine forces to create a jointly owned enterprise.
Syndicates are temporary associations of two or more firms or individuals, usually for mutual investment. Banks often form syndicates in order to share the risk of a (particularly) large loan request. The syndicate hires no permanent staff, nor does it open an office. Once the loan has been repaid, the syndicate disbands.
Technical partnership. One company buys part of another company‘s stock so two can team up to develop new technologies and products.
Cooperatives. An association of people or small companies with similar products, services, or interests may form to obtain greater bargaining power...
