It’s a cliché, but London really is a city of villages.
parks, and the palaces. To the east are Shaftesbury Avenue and Leicester Square, for theaters and Soho; to the west is Piccadilly itself, heading out to Hyde Park and Knightsbridge. This is also a great place to board a double-decker sightseeing bus - - just remember to have some sort of protective wrap handy: atop these buses it’s always windy.
That’s one of the best things about the city: everything has been seen before, and history is forever poking its nose in. Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it on top of a past layered like striated rock. You can see the cross sections clearly sometimes, as in the City, where lumps of Roman wall nest in the postmodern blocks of the street helpfully named London Wall. Walk toward the Thames to Cheapside, which you can tell was the medieval marketplace if you know the meaning of “ceap” (“to barter”), and there’s the little Norman church of St. Mary – le – Bow, rebuilt by Wren and then again after the Blitz, but still ringing the Bow Bells....
