From The History of London

Here are some words about London‘s past. In 55 B.C the Romans under Julius Ceasar came to the British Isles and found there on a bank of the river Thames a village named Llyn-din.
The people who lived on the island were called Britons. the Britons fought against the Romans and drove them away. But about a century later the Romans returned and occupied Britain.
The Romans started calling Llyn-din in their own way – Lon‘dinium. The greater part of goods that were sent to Rome from Britain went through Londinium. Londinium became a rich city and the main trade centre of the country.
The Romans stayed in Britain for four hundred years. After they left in the fifth century , other people came from continent. They were the Angles and the Saxons. The Angles and the Saxons occupied that part of the island that was the nearest to the continent and drove the Britons away to the north and to the west of the island. People started calling the southern part of the island England which means the land of the Angles.
Then, in 1066, the Normans came from the north of France. They were met near Hastings by the Anglo-Saxons who fought bravely against the newcomers, but lost. The country was occupied by the Normans, and the life of the English people became very hard. Everything belonged to the Normans who even tried to make the Anglo-Saxons speak French.
The Norman kings were afraid of the Anglo-Saxons, so they built for themselves a large fortress on the bank of the Thames – the Tower. Now it is a museum. If you go to London, you will see the famous Tower of London, which is nine hundred years old.
As time went on London became an important industrial and trading centre of the largest cities...
