Nemunas ( 937 kilometres) flows into the Baltic Sea. The Tauragnas is the deepest lake. The highest hill is 294 metres above the sea level. It is Juozapinės hill, not far from Vilnius. There are four seasons in a year. Our climate is mild. Lithuania is the agricultural and cattle breeding country.
Lithuania is a respublic and restored its independence on 11 March, 1990. The country is governed by electad representatives. The head of the state is the President, who is elected every five years by inhabitants living in Lithuania. Parliamentary elections are held every four years. At the age of 18 everyone has the right to vote. The Seimas includes 141 members of the Parliament. The leader of the majority parter in Parliament becomes the Prime Minister. He or she chooses the members of Parliament, who will become ministers for various departments. The prime Minister and the most important ministers make up the Cabinet. All the politicians are involved in the actions and activities to create a better future for their citizens. The mayor or mayoress are elected in every town. Local authorites are responsible for education, health care, roads, the police and some other things. Not long ago Lithuania joined NATO and The European Union.

The day of Independence occurs on 16 February. The national flag consists of three colours. Yelow symbolizes the sun, light and prosperity. Green represents the county's landscape, hope and joy. Red is the colour of the earth, life and blood. The national anthem was written by Vincas Kudirka.
