J. Joyce "The Dead"

James Augustus Joyce was born in Dublin in February 1882, the eldest son of a well-off family. He was one of the first modernist writers who were trying to describe reality through actual experience rather than through imaginative fantasy. Joyce’s short story The Dead is his best known and most accomplished piece of writing which was published in the book Dubliners in 1914, almost after a decade it was written. The Dead is the last and longest story of all in Dubliners. There are many humanitarian themes touched on in it: such as glimpses of poverty, political divisions in Ireland as well as criticism of the church and Pope, still main themes of the story are mortality and isolation. Despite all mentioned there is much joy in The Dead also: poverty has just a little part in it, and all participating characters are financially comfortable people celebrating in the midst of holiday season. Most likely thought, which reader can get when seeing the title, is that the action of the tale will take plays in funeral parlor or graveyard, though it is just first impression which is changing when the story advances further. The death is the key point of the tale along with the issue of loneliness and isolation.
The main character, Gabriel Conroy and his wife, arrives at his aunt Kate’s and Julia’s annual dance. The evening begins with Gabriel’s disturbance with Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, which opens the door for him: in his remark, that she is old enough to get married herself, she replies: “The men that is now is only all palaver and what they can get out of you” (2).
