2. General strikes (1919)
1919
Causes:
● The repression during the First World War
● The success of the Russian Revolution in 1917
● Wage cuts imposed on workers at a hydroelectric plant
Consequences:
● Sympathy strikes follow that of the workers of the hydroelectric plant
● Sympathy strikes and factory occupations by workers follow and spread rapidly in other industries,
over 100 000 workers are involved.
● Compared to the previous strikes, employers were unable to organize effective repression
○ Martial law was declared, Madrid tried to unsuccessfully conscript workers
● The strikes won important concessions:
○ Unions were recognised as legitimate representatives of workers
○ An eight hour work day was achieved for the whole of Spain
● Industrialists and employers hire pistoleros in order to assassinate hundreds of anarchists and
socialists, anarchist retaliation leads to the death of Prime Minister Dato in 1921.

● Spanish rule of Morocco since 1906
Consequences:
● Humiliating military defeat for the Spanish government
● Republic of the Rif declared by Berber rebels in September 1921
● The continuation of the Rif war until 1926

Causes:
● In August 1930 Prieto was a central figure in the formation of the Republican coalition known as the
Pact of San Sebastián. Julián Besteiro was opposed to the idea but Prieto's old enemy, Francisco Largo
Caballero, gave it his support as he felt it was the only way the Socialist Party would gain power.
