Fashion history

Fashion, like all the arts, serves as a release from the humdrum in life. Part fantasy and part romance; it turned Cinderella into a princess and Beau Brummel into a legend. There are many “musts” in life; fashion not being one of them, and there is its pleasure.
To the designer, fashion is an art and more: it’s also a business and an exciting, unpredictable one. Being a fashion designer means being aware of all the important new things that are happening around you. It’s dashing off a simple little thing only to have it, to your amazement, break all records for sales. Fashion, like the theatre, is a continual gamble, and working on a hit collection is as rewarding as being part of a hit play.
As far back as 1840, New York was the fashion center of the country and Broadway the great promenade. At the fashionable hour, from two to three, the roadway streamed with hackney coaches, cabs, phaetons, and handcarts, with handsomely dressed woman and young man; on the fingers of the crowd there were the barefoot girls who swept the crossing, the ragged boys hawking matches and newspapers.
In those days, of course, fashion was strictly for the rich. The “rainbow silks and satins” were hand-sewn by tailors and dressmakers, or were imported from Europe. The poor sewed their own garments at home – and it was the poor who supplied the incentive for a ready-to-wear industry, which didn’t come into being in America until roughly a hundred years ago.
At first, only seamen and slaves wore ready-made clothes; Brooks Brothers got its start in Bedford, Massachusetts, about 1830, making clothes for sailors. But as population grew, secondhand dealers found they could no longer supply the demand for ready-to-wear and so they began to have clothes made. The early...
