Famous people in Lithuania

Vytautas the Great was the foremost ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. During his reign in XIV-XV centuries, the GDL became a powerful state (its borders stretching as far as the Black Sea) and gained international recognition, and conditions for the country's economical and cultural development became more favourable.
In 1410, he commanded the confederate army at the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald), where the Order of Knights of the Cross - was finally crushed. He spread Christianity. In 1429, at the Lutsk Congress, it was decided to crown Vytautas the Great as King of Lithuania, but this did not happen because of Polish nobles' intrigues and his unexpected death.
In 1998, Valdas Adamkus was elected President of the Republic of Lithuania.
President Adamkus promoted rapid modernisation of Lithuania and consistently worked for the implementation of this goal.
