Famous automobile engineers

A type of vehicle designed to move on the ground under its own stored power and intended to carry a driver, a small number of additional passengers, and a very limited amount of other load.
Ferdinand Verbiest (1623 - 1688) was Jesuit missionary and astronomer. He designed and built the first working steam-powered vehicle in China around 1672. It was a 65- centimetre long scale-model toy that was unable to carry a driver or a passenger. It is not known with certainty if Verbiest's model was successfully built or run.
Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot (1725 - 1804) was a French inventor who built the world's first full-size and working self-propelled mechanical land-vehicle. In 1765 he began experimenting with working models of steam-engine-powered vehicles for the French Army. A full-size version of the car was built in 1770 , specified to be able to carry four tons and travel 7,8 km in one hour.
Josep Nicsephore Niepce (1765 - 1833) was a French inventor, usually credited as the inventor of photography. In 1807 Josep and his brother Claude created what was probably the world's first internal combustion engine.
Jean Joseph Lenoir (1822 - 1900) was a Belgian engineer who developed the internal combustion engine in 1858. Lenoir's engine was commercialized in sufficient quantities to be considered a success, a first for the internal combustion engine. By 1859, Lenoir's experimentation with electricity led him to develop the first internal combustion engine which burned a mixture of coal gas and air ignited by a "jumping sparks„ In 1863 Lenoir built his automobile „Hippomobile“

Nicolaus August Otto (1832 - 1891) was a German engineer who successfully developed the compressed charge internal combustion engine which ran on petroleum gas and led to the modern internal combustion engine. The Association of German Engineers created DIN standard 1940 which says...
