Extended Definition of Word Meaning

On this planet there are thousands of various languages and people from all over the globe express thousands of different words throughout the day, however not everyone analyses the deeper word meaning. Language acquisition entails a great deal of word-to-referent pairing, whether actual or fictitious (Taylor 2017: 246). Thus, to successfully master a language it is really important to be acquainted with its referents. Whilst evaluating word meaning it was noticed that the relationship between words and their referents may be seen from two different angles: “words to the world” and “world to words” (Taylor 2017: 248). For examination, a colour approach method was found to be the most beneficial in contrasting the two techniques: referential, or semasiological, and naming – onomasiological (Taylor 2017: 248).
