ENVIRONMENTAL ART
Can art change our view of the natural world, encouraging us to look at our environment in a new and deeper way? Does environmental art mirror the soul of our planet? Does environmental art challenge our perception of beauty and purpose? Can creativity save our planet?
Art and the environment appeal to reason and feelings. What happens when we mix them? The answer is environmental art, a movement adopted by artists of different disciplines, who are inspired by nature or use it as a raw material, showing its beauty and encouraging us to take care of it. In the 1960s and 1970s, many artists started to move away from the studio to make art of and in nature. They started to create for example sculptures made from found materials. These are materials you can come across simply walking around an environment. These artists use natural materials such as leaves, flowers, branches, ice, soil, sand, stone, and water as the very basis of their artwork. Many artists started creating works in collaboration with the physical world to draw attention to ecological issues such as deforestation or climate change as well as our relationship and contribution to them. For example, “Tree Mountain - A Living Time Capsule” by Agnes Denes uses trees as symbols to encourage us to think about the importance of protecting our forests. Also, Tree Mountain, confirms humanity's commitment to the future well-being of ecological, social, and cultural life on the planet. It is designed to unite the human intellect with nature.
In our town Kaunas we have a very great example of environmental art, it is Yard gallery. Once, mostly Jewish families lived in this yard. All the neighbors got along very well, socialized, and even drank coffee together in the mornings. However, after the regaining of independence, the Jews moved out, and the yard became nothing more than a car parking lot. Eventually, the yard became a mess, but after moving there, the artist Vytenis Jakas decided to change people's old habits with art and play on the walls of houses. You can see a lot of different art in this Yard gallery. At the entrance, you can see a joker who is ready to take pictures with an antique camera. This drawing tells us that once upon a time there were various stories that would be interesting to capture. Also, in the yard, you can see stones with quotes written on them, such as: "Even a poor man has the sun and stars" and "Two people look through the barrier, one sees dirt, the other sees stars." These quotes show that everyone looks at the world differently, and your life depends on it. Some see disgust, and then their life becomes sad and ruined, others see the beauty of nature, and they become happy and do not need anything else.
