It is defined as a negative academic activities-related state of mind characterized by exhaustion, a sense of reduced effectiveness, and decreased motivation.
Academic burnout is conceptualized through three components - emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased academic efficacy (Schaufeli, Martinez, Pinto, Salanova, & Bakker, 2002).
Higher education – is defined as education in universities after completing secondary school.
Mentally tough
Mental toughness - a personal capacity to produce consistently high levels of subjective or objective performance despite everyday challenges and stressors as well as significant adversities.
While this definition is used in the present study, it must be acknowledged that there are many other different definitions of mental toughness (see Lin, Mutz, Clough, & Papageorgiou, 2017)
Recent cross-sectional and prospective studies suggest that students with higher levels of mental toughness tend to have higher psychological well-being, better academic performance, and lower levels of perceived stress (Brand et al., 2016; Papageorgiou et al., 2019, 2018).
Adolescents
It is defined as time period between childhood and adulthood.
More recently, young adolescents and medical students with low levels of mental toughness were also found to be vulnerable to poor sleep quality (Brand et al., 2016; Haghighi & Gerber, 2019).
Cross-sectional study found that adolescents with high levels of mental toughness had better objective sleep quality compared to peers with low mental toughness (Brand et al., 2014).
Well-being
Well-being – a mere belief that one’s life fits the common standards for good life such as happiness, comfort, and health.
According to the authors, academic burnout and sleep are vital factors to university students’ overall well-being and it is necessary to explore their association further(Li et al., 2020).
