Depiction and characterization of animals in the fiction of Jack London and Yann Martel

Theme relevance: Animals have been relevant in fiction ever since people could not write. From being drawn on cave walls to being written in the novel and involving in movies and animations. An animal in literature represents many themes and issues not only covering animal’s relevant problems but also human beings social issues.
Purpose: is to show that animals in the fiction of Jack London and Yann Martel’s novel the Life of Pi are more than just non-human beings; that they can be characters in their own right. It is to explore the role of animals; to show that they represent human life and personalities and act as individuals.
Methods:
The historical method was used to provide principle knowledge about the general theory of animals in fiction.
The comparative method was applicable while comparing how animals are depicted and characterized in various stories.
The analytical method was used to analyze how depiction and characterization of animals in the fiction of Jack London and Yann Martel.
Descriptive method was used to describe the similes used by Jack London and Yann Martel in their fiction.
Results and conclusions:
The representation of animals in literature has a long and venerable history, from being drawn on caves to being written about in contemporary literature. There are two main types of animal usages in fiction: Literary uses – animals as characters, setting, telling the story from animal’s point of view. Linguistic uses – simile, anthropomorphism, personification, symbol, etc.
The analysis and comparison of animals as characters in Jack London and Yann Martel’s fiction resulted that nonhuman beings can play a role as protagonists, antagonists or a secondary character in literature.
Animals as part of the setting can be divided into two types: backdrop (not important, can happen in any other setting), inaugural (important, influencing actions, people and main events).
