Geography, climate, vegetation
Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. Located between the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea on the southeast. It consists of Jutland in the West and 406 islands in the east, of which the most important ones are Zealand on which capital Copenhagen is located.. Denmark is one of the smaller states of Europe, only slightly larger than Switzerland.
The country is low and flat with rolling hills. However the island of Bornholm is hilly and rugged. The coastline is particularly long because of the number of fjords.
Each year more than 125,000 ships pass through the Danish Straits.
Environment
Denmark has few forests; the island of Bornholm is the kingdom's most densely forested area. In the countryside there is a variety of flora which supports hundreds of species of small animals and as many as three hundred species of birds; the swan is the national bird.
Government
Denmark is a constitutional monarchy, which is govern by Parliament, king/qeen and the ministers in the Cabinet. The Evangelical Lutheran Church is supported by the State as a State Church. The parliamentary system has been unicameral since 1953; the parliament is called the 'Folketing'
Today, Denmark cooperates closely with the Nordic countries, the EU, the UN and NATO but at the same time, Denmark has been able to maintain a clear and distinctive foreign and defence policy profile.
The monarch is Queen Margrethe II.
