Media organizations face a new challenge – market pressures, which are undermining the quality of journalism. Public service and public trust, however, should remain the bedrock of journalism.
Nowadays journalists face a lot of challenges, not only because of competition, sometimes called “rat race” but also because of potential pitfalls, where even a professional can sink. Serving society is not as easy as it may seem from the first glance. Holding politicians and officials accountable to the public can make you too closely associated with those in power. Market pressures are not the exception.
There are journalistic principles and rules, which should be respected for your own good. First of all it is important to decide why you had become a journalist and to realize that this is not a way to earn a lot of money. Focusing on money may have damaging impact on your career. a If you want lots of money, you would be better off looking for another job. Secondly, if a person takes bribes, impartiality, accuracy, consistency is lost. Accepting dishonest payments, or gifts for favours can help you build a new house, but not to have a good career.
