Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) – are characterized by “social communication impairments” and “restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior”.
Coping is defined as “constantly changing cognitive and behavioural efforts to manage specific external and internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person” (Lazarus and Folkman 1984, p. 141).
• According to Attwood (2006), stress in children with Asperger’s syndrome may cause, in the short term, a greater rigidity, especially regarding routines, and strong emotional reactions (crying fits, anxiety attacks, etc.) and, in the long term, a withdrawal into themselves and a greater investment in special interests.
• In addition, adults with ASD in employment report a perceived discrimination in their workplace directly correlated to the degree of severity of their symptoms (Johnson and Joshi 2016).
• Another study has shown that adults with ASD have significantly higher levels of perceived stress, observed stress and composite stress than adults without ASD, and that their stress level is a possible predictor of their social functioning (Bishop-Fitzpatrick et al. 2015).
• The overall objective of the study is to give an insight into the coping strategies adopted by people with mild forms of ASD.
• Participants were 31 adults aged from 15 to 53.
• They met DSM-4 criteria for the diagnosis of high-functioning autism or Asperger’s disorder.
• The age of the diagnosis was between 6 to 50 years (M = 29.1 years).
• Fourteen men and 17 women from France were interviewed.
Procedure and Data Analysis
• The first author conducted all the interviews; each one lasted between 30 min and 3 h.
• Twenty-nine were in person, while the rest were via Skype or telephone interviews.
