Ch. Potok "The Chosen"

Chaim Potok, author of novel The Chosen, shows the change in Reuven as a personality. There is couple of a character in the novel that does affect Reuven and help him to mature. Reuvens father – David Malter does the main impact on creating Reuvens characters. Both of personages spend long hours talking and discussing various subjects – from the friendship with Danny, till the rebuilding the Jerusalem. All off that affects Reuven and shapes his worldview. It was his father who gave the initiative for Reuven to become friends with Danny Saunders. Danny is the only Reuvens friend. After they become friends it is seen that both of the kids enjoy their friendship. Because of their strong inner relationship, and friendship both kids suffered a huge satisfaction of their discussions. In a way they both matured evenly and evolved their point of view about many things in life equally. After his father has a heart attack we can see Reuven experiencing a great deal of pain, the same pain he feels when his friendship breaks with Danny, which also in a way shapes Reuvens personality.
The first real impact in Reuvens life, which shakes his little world, is the accident in the baseball field. Till that event we see Reuven as a self confident boy, but after Danny, on purpose, hit’s him with the baseball, Reuven, for the first time in the story feels anger and hatred “That Danny Saunders was a smart one, and I hated him. I wondered what he was thinking now. Probably gloating and bragging about the ball game to his friends. That miserable Hasid!" (46) This accident provokes Reuvens hard feelings, which also has an impact on shaping his worldview. After Reuven is out from hospital, he has a talk with his father David Malter....
