I. Aims and Objectives
The general aim of this sociological research is to find out whether youth (16-30 years of age), who live in Limerick City Centre agree or disagree with the presumption that the smoking ban can help people to give up smoking. “Sociologists obtain their knowledge of human behavior through research, which results in a body of information that helps us move beyond guesswork and common sense in understanding society. The sociological perspective incorporates theory and research to arrive at a more accurate understanding of the “hows” and “whys” of human social interaction. Social research, then, is a key part of sociology.”(Kendall 2007:38)
II. Introduction
I am a student of Economic Science with Information Systems in LCFE. As part of this course I am doing a Sociology module and have been asked to carry out research on the topic of my own choice. The reason I have chosen to investigate if Limerick youth think that the smoking ban has helped people to give up smoking is because I work as a bar tender and hear different opinions about this topic every day.
• History of Smoking
Tobacco has been smoked as part of ritual practiced in North and South America long before it began to be cultivated, during the period of 5000 to 3000 BC. The Mayans, the Aztecs and the Caribs and numerous other peoples in the Western Hemisphere, smoked one form of tobacco or another. Although tobacco could also be chewed, drunk as a tea, inhaled as a powder (snuff), inserted as a liquid enema and consumed as a jelly, it was smoking, the burning of the herb to produce smoke, that quickly became the part of priestly healing ritual both to diagnose and cure illness as well as to drive out the evil spirits...
