INTRODUCTION

The use of amplifiers

Any guitarist, that wishes to enhance the sound of his instrument comes to a halt,

when choosing the right type of amplifier for himself. Should he use an analogue one, that has

that true tube “warmth”, or maybe he should choose a digital one, for extensive customisation

and editing of his desired tonal characteristics? What would be the better option, and what type

of guitarists use of what type of amplifiers. The aim of this research is to compare the

characteristics of analogue and digital guitar amplifiers, to better understand the correct use of

these two types of amplifiers. To achieve this, research would be conducted on existing articles

written in this theme, and practical tests conducted for a better understanding of the outcome

of this topic.

What are analogue and digital guitar amplifiers? Analogue guitar amplifiers are

amplifiers that have a solid state, (transistors, resistors, capacitors etc.) or valve pre-amp that

produces it´s unique tonal characteristics and a solid state or valve power amp, which amplifies

the signal and drives the speaker resulting in a distinct sound of an instrument that is unique to

each amp. Digital guitar amplifiers on the other hand use digital algorithms to produce selected

tonal characteristics, they can take form either as physical amplifiers with small computer

chips, that have a solid state power amp to amplify its signal and drive the speaker, small

computer chips in an enclosure of a guitar effects pedal or just purely a digital amplifier that

works like a computer program or a VST in a DAW. A guitar amplifiers job isn’t simply

amplification of a guitars signal, it is also needed to create a distinct sound and enhance the

tonal characteristics of the guitar. That is achieved by the amplifiers circuit distorting the signal,
