Abortion – what is it?
Abortion – is the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus

• Legal in Lithuania up to 12 weeks
• If there are any complications - up to 22 weeks
• Around 56 million abortions are performed each year in the world, with about 45% done unsafely.
• Among the safest procedures in medicine.
Types

Induced abortion
a. Therapeutic
b. Elective(voluntary)
Induced therapeutic abortion
Performed to save the life of the pregnant woman
Prevent harm to the woman's physical or mental health
Child will have a significantly increased chance of premature morbidity or mortality or be otherwise disabled
Selectively reduce the number of fetuses to lessen health risks associated with multiple pregnancy
Induced elective abortion

◦ Lack of support from the parents
◦ Inability to afford an additional child
◦ Relationship problems with their partner
◦ Too young to have a child
◦ Was raped
◦ Disapproval of single or early motherhood
