Who caused the Cold War? Critically assess the different claims made for the culpability of the USA and USSR.
To begin with, while some historians are looking for the roots of the Cold War after the Second World War, others find out the origins of the Cold War much earlier, during the First World War. J.L.Gaddis points out: “The events of 1917-1918 created a symbolic basis for conflict between communism and capitalism by setting the self-proclaimed objectives of the United States and Soviet Russia against one another in the most fundamental way.” [John Lewis Gaddis, 1997, 6]. The main event of these years had become “Russian Revolution” of 1917. It was the worst matter about what could have thought USA: the new Russian system mutinied against capitalism and democracy and announced world revolution. Bolsheviks’ motto was: “All power to the Soviets” [“All power to the Soviets”, (1998), The Nation, ]. Russia demanded for new territories and wanted to expand its borders that had meant the spread of communism. This was not acceptable to USA and led towards the first approaches of the Cold War in culpability of Russia. The consequences of Russian Revolution: the capitalism was liquidated and introduced proletariat’s dictatorship in Russia.
Some historians consider that the start for the Cold War gave Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech.
