What is the importance of blood donation to society?

Blood donation is a social phenomenon when a person voluntarily gives blood to blood banks, so it could be used for good cause and for people in need. Blood transfusion helps millions of people to survive or maintain health everyday. Blood donation is not only a social phenomenon. People often donate because of different personal reasons. In this essay I will delve into the topic of the importance of blood donation for donors and for the receivers, which confirms blood donation’s huge impact on society.

“The world’s health organisation even initiated a day to commemorate this community and action. This is mentioned annually on June 14^th. This day was chosen in honor of an Austrian Nobel laureate immunologist Karl Lansteiner, who identified the main blood types and created their classification system. Blood type is one of the most important factors in this process for the donor and for the receiver.” (1)

Donating blood is not only a direct benefit of replenishing blood for those in need, but it’s also very benefitial for donors. Blood is given in cases such as: those who are sufferingg from oncological or other serious diseases, during a complex medical procedure or operation, for those who are giving birth, for those who have suffered a serious injury, during a disaster and the last but not least - it is one of the essential means of saving lives, improving the quality of life or prolonging it. According to the National Blood Center, several hundred people in Lithuania are in need of blood everyday. Some benefits of blood donation for regular donors are to improve heart health and to reduce cancer risks, also to maintain a healthy liver and to stimulate blood cell production. One of the biggest benefits is emotional - knowledge that each of us can save lives.
