The European Union is a supranational organization dedicated to increasing economic integration and strengthening cooperation among the member states.
Firstly, it was European Community and it was set up with the aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars between neighbors, which culminated in the Second World War. As of 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community begin to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace. The six founders were: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
The European Union was established on the 1st of November in 1993, when the treaty on European Union was ratified by 12 members of the European Community: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
Now there are 27 countries in European Union. And there are 3 new candidate countries, which want to be the members of this Union.
