"The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story full of various symbolic elements, which are of great importance. Poe uses symbolism to unfold a gripping tale of terror with insight into the human condition.
To begin with, the seven rooms signify the seven stages that a person goes through in his life: birth, toddler, childhood, teen years, middle years, senior years and death. In the story, the placement of the rooms is also significant to this theory. The rooms go from east to west that represents the way the sun rises, or is "born" each morning and then sets or "dies" each night. Such a layout of the rooms is done so as a metaphor for life.
In the story, colours play a very significant role. The rooms are blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and black, with scarlet panes. Symbolically, blue means birth, green represents growth, as it is connected to vegetation and spring, as well as teen years. Purple, a colour of royalty, represents achievements. Orange refers to the autumn of life, or middle age, while white refers to old age as in white hair. Violet is synonymous with peace and fidelity, therefore, it fits after the white room, since in old age, people often make peace with their lives. Black is a colour of blindness and, definitely, death. It is also associated with the unknown and fear. However, the predominant colour, despite all the others competing for attention is red....
