The Renaissance (William Shakespeare)

The Middle Ages were followed by a time known in art and literature as the Renaissance. The word Renaissance first meant the rebirth of classical arts and sciences in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many writers and learned men became interested in antique literature. They were called humanists, they interests lay in man. Humanistic learning placed man in centre of life on the earth, making him an observer and, at the same time, a critic of the world of life. Many old universities flourished and new universities were founded (among them, Vilnius University in 1579). One of other important changes was the Reformation. Many countries broke away from Catholicism and set up their own Church, the Protestant Church. What is more, there were Copernican new heavens, the great geographical discoveries.
In comparison with other European countries, the Renaissance came to England later and more slowly. The last half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries were the golden age of English literature. It was the age of Shakespeare. By that time England had become a powerful state. Many fine books and poems were written in that period, but it was theatre that enjoyed the greatest popularity among the English people. All London went to see the plays of the great dramatists, and greatest of them all was William Shakespeare.
