The Federal Respublic of Germany

The Federal Respublic of Germany consists of 16 states that enjoy considerable independence.
The povers of states direcly affect the daily life of the individual.The states have their own constitutions and enact their own laws, especially those laws pertaining to education, communal organizations and regulatory authorities.
The states also have extensive administrative authority. In addition to executing their own laws, the states also execute most federal statutes as matters of their own concern. They function as '' Agents of the Federation '' ( Article 85 of the basic Law, the consitution of the Federal Respublic of Germany ) in matters such as autobahn and federal highway construction.
Sutuated in Central Europ, Germany has common borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Respublic and Poland.
81.8 million ( 42.0 million women, 39.8 million men; more than seven million foreigners ). Population density: 229 people per sq km.

Type of state:
Federal state with 16 constituent states ( see map in nex page ). After the first free electronic in the former German Demokratic Respublic ( GDR )on March 1990, the members of Volkskammer ( in GDR parliament ) voted to establish five new states. On 3 October 1990, the GDR-and thus the states : Brandenburg, Macklenburs-Western Pomerani, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia- acceded to the Federal Respublic of Germany. The eleven boroughs in the eastern part of Berlin were united with the states of Berlin.
Parliament :
German Bundestag. The deputies are elected in general, diret, free, equal and secret elections. The Bundestag is elected for a four- year term. Plenary sessions are chaired by one of the five members of the Bundestag Presidium.
