The death penalty

Our presentation is about the most arguable [‹a:gjuəbl] kind of punishment – the death penalty. It is also called a capital punishment. The death penalty has been in man’s society dating back to ancient [‹einšənt] times. There have been a variety of crimes that have been punishable by death, anything from selling beer to murder. And people always were looking for new more humane [hju:‹mein], or conversely – more cruel and interesting ways to kill each other.
Now I will try to review the history of death penalty and the kinds of executions [›eksi‹kju:šns].
The death penalty has existed as long as humans have existed. The quote [kwout] (citata) “an eye for an eye” is found in the Bible [‹baibl]. There are a lot of cases when God tells to use the ‘Supreme penalty’. First of all we could see that in the God’s actions. The God killed people, who had harmed Israel [‹izreiəl].
But why are some Christians against it? Why are some Christians for it? Surprisingly, many Christians oppose (priešintis) the death penalty. Almost everyone has an opinion on the death penalty.
• Supporters of capital punishment cite [sait] (remtis) numerous [‹nju:mərəs] scriptural [‹skriptšərəl] (biblinis) passages (ištrauka) , which seem to lend (suteikti) support to their position. In the Old Testament [‹testəmənt], the people put to death included those who made sacrifices (aukos) to false gods, and those who committed similar offenses against the faith (tikėjimas) and cult of Israel.
• On the other hand, those who oppose the death penalty note scriptural exceptions. Cain [kein] (Kainas) was not put to death for slaying [sleijing] (užmušti) his brother Abel [‹eibel] .
